5.27.10

Jenn and Jakey came for a visit from Massachusetts. We took them to the bike path and the East End Beach. Now we are all hanging out, I am baking bread and we are trying to get Sadie to take a nap. In a couple hours I have my second interview that I hope hope hope I get the position and after that I am going to take Jenn of her first ever trip to Marden's.

5.26.10

Old Orchard Beach was soooo hottt today! When I checked the thermometer in my car of the outside temp. it read 95 degrees. The sand was like fire and the water was gorgeous. Sadie had the best time running from the waves and splashing in the water.

After we spent a couple hours on the beach Eric and Sadie shared a soft serve ice cream with cherry dip from Dairy Queen (their favorite place). And then we headed down Route 1 to Wells, ME to visit the Perkins side of the family.

It was great to see them since we won't be seeing any of the Mainers this weekend (Memorial Weekend). We are heading up north to Tenant's Harbor with our friends Ryan and Sarah!!!

Tomorrow my sister and Jakey are coming and I am so excited to take Jakey to the East End Beach. I miss him so badly. Also, I have the second interview for a much wanted (needed) job.

Keep the good vibes coming folks.

The Bike Path- Portland, ME

5.25.10

Last night (or early this morning that is), Eric's bike got stolen from Monument Square here in Portland. It is a weird story and if you want to hear it, it is best to hear it from him because I will not do it justice.

I feel really bad for Eric. Now he is totally up a creek without a paddle. I have a good feeling it will turn up though. I really hope it does anyway.

It was straight up hot today! Sadie and I braved the heat to walk to playgroup on Munjoy Hill. I also had my interview and I have a second one coming up on Thursday (yay!). After all of that fun we all walked the bike path and headed to the East End Beach. I put my feet in, but Sadie went completely in, clothes and all.

Tomorrow we are going to Old Orchard Beach pending the weather report.

5.24.10

Today we hiked Rattlesnake Mountain in Raymond, ME. Sadie was especially excited about the name and the mountain because one of her favorite animals. We finished off the day with lots of water, thrift shopping and a little ice cream.

Lost bummed me out last night, just sayin'.

Also I have a huge interview tomorrow, so wish me luck!!!

5.23.10

First things first... still no job :(

But the good news is there are two new prospects in the works. One is working with homeless teens (awesome) and the other is working with incarcerated women (ummm dream job!!!).

Also, I had a panic attack last night thinking about grad school and have decided that the common denominator for all the jobs I have been interviewing for and looking at prefer an MSW, but require a bachelor's degree. The decision right now is to got to Social Work school... Opinions can be offered of why I should do this or why I should not!

On the other hand, it has been a bit crazy here is Portland. Arwen came for a visit and her and I got way too drunk one night. I made a few mishaps, but overall we made it home all in one piece.

Today we drove up to Oxford, ME. We passed many crazy towns and beautiful scenery. One cool spot we saw was Poland Springs in Poland Springs, ME (duh!).

We got Eric new sneakers at the New Balance Factory Outlet and went to two Marden's. If you don't know what Marden's is then you should and if you do know then you will know that we bought some random crap because that is what you do at Marden's...

Now time for Prison Birth Project conference call so I have to run. More adventures in the works.

Sunday 5.16,10

My sister graduated from college yesterday...yay!

Today is her graduation party so we are all down in North Andover, MA for the party. We came down Friday night and I hung out with my sister last night to celebrate her graduation and Eric went to Boston to hang out with his friends. He came back today super hung over and was pretty much useless to help with the party and/or watch Sadie...oh well, I guess I have been there plenty of times too.

Last week I decided I was not interested in the job I shadowed. I was asked if I was interested in a different position at one of the organizations that I had not been hired for the position I interviewed for in the first place. I said yes of course, but the pay is not incredible...It is not horrible, though, but I don't even know if they will offer me the position.

I also had another interview with a different company and I think it went well and would love to be offered that position. Hopefully they will let me know this week.

Along with all of these interviews and what not I was able to get my computer back, but instead of the computer working well it broke after two hours of having the damn thing back. Luckily, I paid for the warranty so Best Buy gave me a whole new laptop...thank gawd!

Now I am typing this blog post from my new computer using my parents fast, wireless internet.

I would also like to add that I watched the movie, "You Don't Know Jack," which is a movie about Dr. Kevorkian and I highly recommend it.

5.10.10

Portland sucks when you have no job and little money. There are some cool things to do and see, but it seems like everything takes cash to do it.

I had three first interviews and two second interviews last week, but I feel no closer to employment than I was was a week and a half ago. To top things off, Saturday afternoon my computer completely broke. So as of right now I have no functioning computer, which means no internet and no way to job search.

I did, however, go to the Reiche Branch of the Portland Library System to check my e-mail and new job postings (the main branch is closed on Mondays). Unfortunately, no new positions had been posted.

Luckily, I talked to the "Geek Squad" at Best Buy and the people at Dell and within the week my computer should be back. I am going to lose everything on the computer, though... bummer!!!

One good thing is that I am at least still in the running for one open position and I might be job shadowing later in the week.

Keep your fingers crossed for me.

5.8.10

We went from a righteous lifestyle, eating all organically, to eating factory farm food left and right. Ugh, being poor sucks!

Loneliness in yet another new place 5/5/10

5/5/10
4:11 p.m.

Eric has gone out every single night since we have been living in Portland. Now don't get me wrong, I am happy he has a social life, but I am jealous and really sad to always be left behind.

Okay, that was it for complaining, next for some good news...

I had two job interviews yesterday. One was in person and one was via telephone, but that is okay. Wish me luck and hope that I get one of these. I also have another interview tomorrow.

More good news: we got internet!!! and we got a futon!!!

Some not so great news: Erin and Chris came up for a visit on Sunday to see our new place and celebrate Eric's birthday and on the way to Silly's where we were going to eat dinner, Sadie fell and hit her head pretty bad. We had to take an ambulance to the hospital... Luckily, it was no big deal and apparently the head just bleeds a lot, but because it bleeds a lot when it gets cut, it also heals up really fast.

So good news= Sadie is totally fine.

Also, for lunch today we went to a vegan restaurant called Little Lads on Congress St. It was quite tasty and actually I brought home leftovers and am quite hungry... I am going to dine on those right now.

5.1.10

5/1/10
10:00 p.m.

I can not believe it is already May.

We have officially moved into our new apartment on Grant St., in Portland. We met the neighbors upstairs, well at least the mother and son. The little boy is just about three and him and Sadie played really well together. The mom seems really cool too and even has a job lead for me. yay! I have been scared about having no income, but after this good encounter I am not so scared anymore.

Eric is off at a party just outside of Portland and Sadie is asleep alone in her new room. So for me it is red wine, weird tv, then off to bed alone...

Tomorrow = Eric's 28th birthday

4.28.10

4/28/10
7:55 p.m.

We are already new residents of Portland, ME. We drove up there to see some apartments and ended seeing five and picked our favorite. We got a two bedroom near Deering Oak Park.

Before agreeing that this would be our new home we ate at an ultra delicious vegetarian bistro called The Green Elephant on Congress St. Looking around the city we got a pretty good idea of the sites and sounds of Portland. There are definitely some interesting people in this city. I just really hope to find a job and hopefully one that I don't hate!

Along with this chaos, Sadie was obviously not feeling well. She was basically just sleeping all day, but then after signing our lease we realized she was rather warm as well. We had to take her to the ER at York Hospital in York, ME because her primary care doctor was still up in Damariscotta. Her doctor was Elliot Smith.

No, not the dead singer/songwriter, the doctor...well a doctor. It ended up that Sadie had an ear infection, so I got her medicine and then we headed back to Eric's grandmother's to eat supper and relax.

4.27.10

4/27/10
4:40 p.m.

So we are now in Wells, ME. We left the farm, could not handle it. We did the irresponsible thing of just taking off...

I did tell the boss in the morning that I could not handle it, but she wanted us to stick around until the afternoon. We ended up just leaving a note. We had packed and Sadie was itching just to get in the car, since she observed our packing and abruptness to leave this stuff behind. It was just easier to go.

We left Whitefield and headed to Damariscotta to return DVDs and books we had been using from there. During our ride to Damariscotta the song "Going to the Country..." by Canned Heat played again on the radio. Coincidence? I couldn't really say.

After dropping stuff off we drove south down Route 1 heading towards Grammy Perkins' house. This is Eric's paternal grandmother. On the way, we passed through Wiscassett, Bath, and Brunswick. All stunning little towns. Finally, we got to Portland, then Biddeford and finally Wells.

At this point I knew I had to change the name of the blog so here is the new name: MAINE DAYS WITH SADIE OWL AND PABLO HAYES.

Arriving in Wells, we were greeted by Eric's grandfather, Aunt Linda and Aunt BEvy. We had decided en route that we would crash there and start looking for an apartment and jobs in Portland, ME.

One adventure is over, but now for another. Tomorrow+ looking at five apartments in Portland. No regrets, just keep passing by open windows.

4/26/10

4/26/10
5:10 p.m.

We transplanted onions today from the greenhouse to the field half a mile from the farm. Getting the onions from the greenhouse was easy, but then planting them in the field was hell.

I actually talked to our bosses about wanting to leave and there were so nice. They are so nice, so I felt even worse for wanting to abandon them. I told them I would try another week. Eric says that if I am really this miserable we should just leave now, but I am going to try and hold out.

UPDATE: 5.24.10
This is totally out of date and context, but I just found a photo of Eric taking a "shower" and had to post it!!!

4/25/10

4/25/10
7:30 p.m.

I just sat in a drive way to use the internet. It was in front of a house where these people that we kind of know live. It felt weird, but they are cool and said they didn't mind if we used it. Also, after feeling so down about things that have been going on with myself it was nice for me to get to have a chance to talk to some other young person who is farming and adapting to this type of lifestyle. She asked me if I was dealing with the "initial shock." I told her that I definitely was and that as long as this is just an initial feeling and a temporary one I would be okay and that things should be looking up in the near, near future.

We shall see.

4/18/10- 4/25/10 "The Fox Hunt & More"

4/19/10
6:55 a.m.

We went on a fox hunt yesterday afternoon.

Eric, Sadie, our boss and his son kind of went looking for a fox, but in the process saw the pigs’ pasture in the back field and did find some fox poop.
* * *
We ate some really yummy mashed potatoes last night and then watched the documentary we rented. This morning we woke up to a frost . I realize I am in a nasty mood because I really need a shower. I gave Sadie a full sponge bath with water flowing over her to rinse. I was jealous.

Anyway, Eric had a dream about Chloe Sevigny. Apparently, he truly believes that not only did she have a dime-sized tattoo of a monarch butterfly, but that she also had the exact same dream at the exact same time. I will research further if I care to remember. Off to make my muddy coffee and eat some breakfast before chores.

4/19/10
8:30 p.m.

I am tired!

Today I went in to let the hens and rooster out of their house and much to my dismay, one of the hens was slumped over bleeding with other hens pecking at her. I immediately shooed the other hens, yelled to my boss, and she came in and explained that the hens must have been fighting over food.

She then snapped the hens’ neck and ripped the head off.

(This woman is hardcore).

We knew what we were having for supper tonight.

Later, we spread black plastic for soon-to-be plants… Oh, and I almost forgot…I gave the piglets booster shots in their butts. Eric claimed he was just letting me shine, but I think he was squeamish.
After chores tonight I got to take my first real shower. I feel so much better. Then we cooked the chicken breast and had dinner. The chicken was pretty gross and I felt super bad because I was sad about the chicken being murdered by her housemates and then I thought she tasted like shit.

Tomorrow it is off to Damariscotta with the head lady, but of course my car is messed up right now. My damn car battery died because Eric and Sadie left the dome light on.

Thankfully, someone is going to jump in tomorrow.

4/20/10
7:30p.m.

I made red lentils with rice tonight. I cooked the rice incorrectly, it tasted crappy.

We went into town this morning. We went to this great co-op grocery store and then ran other errands including sing-along/story time at the library, which Sadie really enjoyed. It was a lot of running around, but good to see what else is going on in that area. We also went to a place called “Chicken John’s.” There were baby goats and they were so cute…all the kids wanted kids. My boss helped deliver one of the kids and as payment the goat is now named after him.

Lastly, we went to a lumber yard to get wood to build a pig shelter.

Eric hung back at the farm and I have to say, I am so proud of him because he did all the chores by himself and he put out more plastic on his own. I have a feeling he sincerely enjoyed the solitude.

During chores tonight we met out boss’s father. He was very nice and very knowledgeable. After chores we met a young couple who are starting a farm on the male’s families’ land about three miles down the road. They were rad and I guess they have five other people crashing in their living room working on getting shit started. I hope we hang out with them soon. I’d love to make some good friends while we are up here.

4/21/10
1:15 p.m.

So after chores and three hours of putting down plastic for vegetables, I am attempting to bake two loaves of bread. I just kneaded the dough 600 times, as the book ordered and am patiently waiting for it to rise. I can’t wait to see how this turns out…

4/21/10
8:00 p.m.

The oven in the cabin does not work. This is an enormous disappointment, but I will bring my loaves to the boss’s and finally bake my bread.

Today, there was another, more traumatic event; Sadie burned her leg on the construction light we use to light up the cabin. Well actually, she did it a couple of days ago, but it seemed fine until today… The blister fell off leaving her skin to be just raw. I knew that Sadie needed a bandage, a big one to be exact, but where do I get one???

There are not any CVSs’ or any other pharmacies here and there, so I try the nearest health center, which is still six miles away. Sadie and I drive there and the receptionist is very pleasant. Unfortunately, the office manager is an asshole and tells me to go to Sadie’s doctor and they can not even spare a bandage. By this time it is nearly five, so I just head back to the farm and I have to decide if I should just go to a drug store that is about 15 miles away or take Sadie to the ER which is even further. Eric calls Sadie’s doctor and gets a kind, triage nurse. She tells us to just go for the bandage. I head to the drug store, which is in Gardiner, Maine and realize I have to get gas before I can go any further. At this gas station there is delicious smelling pizza, but I have the will power to just keep trekking and resist the urge to be seduced by the sweets smells of PIZZA. We finally get to the store, get bandages, then head home.

Sadie and I arrive home to catch the end of wheat planting. I then make tofu, pasta, and broccoli for dinner. Eric doesn’t want to do the dishes or make a fire eventhough he promised to wash the dishes and he knows that my throat hurts and think I am getting sick. It will only be in the high 30’s tonight!

I obviously get pissed off, but instead of handling it well I pull the classic, “Kristine move,” and flip out. In the end, I wash the dishes and Eric builds a fire. Fair enough.

4/22/10
3:50 p.m.

Thunderstorm!!!

Well so far it is only thundering and lightning with dark grey skies, but the rain is supposedly coming soon.

It is definitely apparent that Eric does not want to be here and it has only been a week. I say this because he is treating me like S-H-I-T and that is typically code for Eric is not happy.

When Eric ain’t happy ain’t nobody happy!

Today we laid two rows of plastic and then headed to Augusta, ME to go thrift store shopping. We also went to get Eric a driver’s education booklet, so he could start studying for his driver’s test. While doing these errands we found a Pizza Hut and there was a $5 per person all-you-can buffet. I was seduced. It was good, but gross ha! I really thought this would cheer Eric up…it didn’t.

We then headed to a playground for Sadie to burn off some energy and then back to the farm to work on the new pig shelter. Once we were back in the cabin there was not much to do, so the arguing continued. Man, does this suck!

4/22/10
6:22 p.m.

I suffer from depression, just a random fact about me… No, it is actually not random in this scenario, it is very essential. I have come to realize that a week has gone by and I don’t know if farm living is the life for me. We have been having fun and working hard, but am I just not cut out for this sort of thing?

This question ran around my brain for quite a bit this evening. Sadie was asleep, so Eric went and did chores, while I stayed back, intending to do some reading. I read a little, but mostly just cried.

There are so many challenges up here; no running water, limited electricity, no indoor plumbing/bathroom, a wood stove for heat (which I can’t start a fire in for the life of me), miles between us and any stores, lots of hard work, no internet, and only a couple of movies to watch here and there.

Am I just too attached to modern conveniences? Am I just a wage slave? A capitalist? Am I just a norm who should be living a normal point A to point B lifestyle?

We have only been here for a week and I am already at a crossroads. Maybe if I can just get over this cold and Sadie can stop getting hurt everyday things won’t seem so difficult…

4/23/10
6:30 a.m.

Woke up still feeling sick, but willing to work through things until I get better; it turns out the bread I made, while super dense, doesn’t taste half-bad. The 3 year-old boy, gave me his mark of approval with his catch-phrase of, “It’s pretty good!”

It’s kind of chilly out today. It seems either too hot or too cold and never just right. Oh well, looks like we will all be bundling up today.

4/24/10
2:30 p.m.

AS I said yesterday, it is either too hot or too cold, never in between. Today the sun is hotttt! The weird thing is, though, is that the temperature does not seem to be reading any warmer than yesterday. I must be losing my mind.

We went to Damariscotta after chores this morning. That town is our sanctuary. I officially put the blog up today (yay!). Too bad I only had time for half of the first entry. The blog is not in real time, which defeats the purpose of a blog I guess, but it’s more of a journal anyway.

I bought some allergy medicine for I what I believe is actually allergies and not a cold. We went to a family day event at the YMCA and I got a GRE book to start studying (yay… kinda).

We finished laying out the last two rows of plastic in the field down the road. Ten rows done! Eric says I should feel accomplished. I am trying to, but the shitty thing is… I am not.

4/24/10
7:00 p.m.

I walked out on chores today.

First, I was attacked by the rooster and then kind of attacked by a pig. I knew I was going to start bawling my eyes out, so I left. I came back to the cabin because I felt like shit, wanted to just cry, and want desperately to pack up my shit and leave. I wasn’t seeing the point of staying somewhere where I was not enjoying myself and as I Sadie before, had no running water, limited electricity, limited heat, lots of hard work, and no internet.

Eric came back from chores and talked to me about stuff. He made a good point… recently, I have been starting things and then just quitting because it doesn’t work out right away. He suggested that instead, I need to stick things out and see how they go for longer than a week, two weeks, or even a year in some cases.

Again, while I am pretty frustrated because I lack the physical and emotional strength that I desperately need right now, I am going to keep on keepin’ on.

4/25/10
2:50 p.m.

We got visitors!!!

Ryan and Sarah, friends from Boston came up. Ryan will be going to school in Unity College in Unity, Maine in August and Sarah is originally from Maine. Unity is about an hour from here.

It was so great to see them. I miss my friends.
They helped us transplant plum trees and then we went to a topless coffee shop in Vassalboro, ME. They would not even let Sarah in because she had left her ID back at the farm, so there was no way Sadie would be allowed into the shop. Sarah agreed to stay in the car with a sleeping Sadie while Eric, Ryan and I checked out the place.

We had to show our IDs through a little peep hole and then were allowed to proceed through the door. I got a coffee, Eric a hot cocoa, and Ryan a decaffeinated tea. Ryan attempted to start up a conversation with the topless lady, but after that didn’t go well, we just decided to leave.

Ryan and Sarah had to get back to Boston, so they left and I helped plant the new plum trees.

So far we have spent about $500 and it has been nine days, with no money coming in, we shall see how long this lasts.

4/16/10- 4/18/10

4/16/10
6:45 a.m.

There is nothing like taking a morning piss in an outhouse and seeing your breath, but honestly, this pee hole/ outhouse thing is the most comfortable thing I have ever sat on!

Oh and did I mention there is a window to look out at the farm while you sit on the hole and just like last night… the view was impeccable.

4/16/10
6:55 a.m.

I have realized Eric is a princess.

I question this aspect of his personality as he tries to shave his face and he responds, “A girl needs a certain amount of comfort.”

4/16/10
10:45 a.m.

Morning chores done!

Just fertilized the plum trees and mulched them = spread shit around the bottoms of baby trees.

Hard work = I feel good.

4/16/10
“Meeting New People”

The WWOFER (volunteer farmer) from last year is a rad woman from Minnesota. She brought whoopee pies from a place called “Big G’s.” They were amazing…peanut butter filling…yummy!

The old Wwoofer, my employer, and I built a fence for the pigs’ new pasture. We had to get these huge rods out of the ground and transplant them along with the metal fencing.

It sucked.

My arms hurt afterwards, but I knew it was really good for my muscles.

We, then, talked about the man we will call the wwoofer’s boyfriend (he’s her boyfriend let’s be honest, terminology can always be a challenge, I definitely know this). He is Greek, they all call him “The Greek.” He’s Greek and he is also a boat builder.

Also, I forgot to mention: the old wwoofer is 21. She left college in search of other things. She landed here at the farm last July/ August and now is just like family towards the owners of the farm. The wwoofer will be working part-time at the farm and also at a dairy farm in a town called South China, Maine.

Yes, for all of you non-mainers, South China is a town in Maine and for the record there is also a China, Maine; Mexico, Maine, and Paris, Maine; just to name a few interesting town names.

The wwoofer informed us that China, Maine is the only town/ city in America named China. I doubt this, but plan on researching it at a later date.

I would just do it now, but internet access is not super good out here… very slow for the likes a city girl like myself.

Later, we all eat ribs and the boyfriend comes over. Eric and I have been vegetarians for a long time and Sadie had never ate meat, but I rationalized it as they were “happy pigs,” ha!

4/17/10
6:20 a.m.

And we wake up and there is snow! I say there is a lot Eric says, no it’s barely any.
We are in a cabin with no heat, any snow at all is a lot to me.

9:45 a.m.

Chores done.

Luckily, the snow has stopped and it really isn’t too cold out.

One of our employers is off to auction and the other is headed to a Maine Organic Farmers and Growers Association (MOFGA) in a different part of Maine, so we are free for the day… yay!!! Off to Hussey’s and then Damariscotta.

4:20 p.m.

We went to Hussey’s! The sign outside did advertise it as a place for “Guns, Wedding Gowns, Cold Beer!” like everyone had told me.
I got lost on the way there and we ended up in Augusta, Maine… the capital city. I got flustered and upset. Flipped out a little bit, but broke down and got an iced coffee from my secret, favorite place…

We turned around and I made Eric get out and go into a lonely gas station to ask for directions.

We then made it to Hussey’s.

We got our rubber boots (and camo hats, it was buy one, get one free!) and then headed to Damariscotta.

I love, love, love Damariscotta. Such a cute town, we got library cards, got on the internet!!! And took out some movies and Eric got a book… (“Arctic Tales” & “Black Stallion” for Sadie; “This is What Democracy Looks Like,” for Eric and I and Eric got a Phish biography).

We then went to one of Maine’s finest, “Reny’s,” and got gloves to use to work. We heard there was a midcoast sustainable living expo at the local YMCA so we hit that up, but this didn’t last very long.

We were in and out. Good space, though. Eric ate a “Big Mac” meal from McDonald’s and back to Whitefield we went. Now it is off to chores.

4/17/10
9:15 p.m.

After chores today while I was cleaning the milking contraption our boss asked me if I wanted veggies and meat for dinner tonight.

Being the newly, non-vegetarian, I kind of did want some meat; but had no clue how to cook it. I told her this and she pulled out some cabbage and ground pork. I had no idea how to cook ground pork. She said it’d be easy, so I took her word for it.

We got back to our cabin, Eric went to get water from the hose across the street and I started on dinner. There would be rice, cabbage and my attempt at pork patties.

The cabbage was steamed just right and a combo of the rice with the butter that came from the one cow here, named Liberty, and it was just lovely. But then there was my attempt at pork patties. First, I boiled the frozen ground pork. Eric laugher, later told our friends, Ryan and Sarah via cell phone conversation and text message respectively, but I just kept on cooking.

I threw some onions in with the pork and while the meat seemed a little tough, I found the meal to be an ultimate success. The red wine I was drinking did not hurt a bit.

Now it is off to pee right outside the doorway because at this time of night I am a little too scared to walk the twenty feet to our outhouse. Wish me luck!

4/18/10
7:10 a.m.

Eric is off to take a shit. His description of his crap today is “Herculean.” Ha!

I made oatmeal for breakfast. I put too much salt in so it sucked. No amount of raw homey or rice milk could subdue the taste of salt. 
